Effective Time Management Tips for Researchers

Creative work which stems from the creative process can be extremely rewarding. When we use our minds to innovate, solve problems, develop strategies, and craft content, we are able to do push the conceptual edges of what we know to be truly possible. On the flip side, however, such tasks come with a set of pressures that can frustrate, baffle, and thwart ideas and processes necessary to see things through to completion. This is especially true for visual artists, managers, consultants, writers, and researchers. From conception to execution, generating brilliant ideas within a limited timeframe calls for attention for pragmatic effectiveness versus the lure of all the possibilities available. Doing the best work requires the ability to manage time wisely.

Let's say you're a student candidate involved in a research project, large or small, that necessitates a considerable amount of brainstorming and focus like a thesis or dissertation. How can you go about eliminating the array of distractions that can take you away from the work at hand? How can you push past the 'time versus value' tension that naturally arises from the pressure to produce quickly and effectively? Here are a few time management tips to help ease the demand of your creative work and help you stay on track.

Tip #1: Don't Reinvent The Wheel

Believe it or not, what you're trying to achieve has been done by others before you. Don't think you have to reinvent the wheel essentially. Consider looking at historical evidence like project templates, research notes, and previous undertakings. Don't be afraid to consult your peers, supervisors who've been in your exact position and extract relevant information regarding useful tools and resources. In the world of project management, this is known as expert judgment - a technique based on consultation of outside parties with the advanced knowledge required for resolution.

Tip #2: Break The Plan Down Into Smaller Pieces

Another methodology involves constructing a prefabricated plan based on measurable milestones. It may sound complicated but is rather simple. Remember work breakdown structure. The goal is to break the project down by categorizing different aspects and placing each part into its respective compartment. Tackling each mini-project one at a time will prove to be considerably easier and less overwhelming than concentrating on the mountain that needs to be climbed.

Tip #3: Learn How To Properly Estimate Duration and Set Aside Time

Whether you use the analog hands of breitling watches and wall clocks or you prefer the digital displays of smartphones and computers, it's vital that you stick to a strict schedule that properly measures the ebb and flow between action and rest. If you plan to dedicate let's say five hours to a certain part of the project (1:30-6:30) and then subsequently plan a two hour resting period (6:30-8:30) before diving back in, this commitment to a pre-planned timeframe fosters efficiency, concentrates effort, and ensures that you will meet the end goal or deadline within appropriate time table. Always keep the physical start point and physical end point at the forefront when breaking down each project point between workable hours.

If you're up against crazy deadlines like most researchers and other modern day creative types, remember: consult the expertise of those who came before you, categorize project details into compartments, and adhere to a strict schedule. These three tips will help you excel at project management.
