Advancing Environmental Science:
AAAS Member Lindsay Wancour

Scientists can dream big, but for climate and environmental science to have a true impact, a lot of groundwork is required – literally. Adventure Scientists, a non-profit organization, recruits outdoor adventurers and community members to collect data in the field. Lindsay Wancour is at the center of this effort as Project Creation Senior Manager. She works with scientists to understand their data needs and whether community-based science models can help.

Intersection of Science and Social Justice:
Mass Media Fellow Aara'L Yarber

As an undergraduate at Howard University, 2023 Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellow Aara’L Yarber accompanied her advisor on a field campaign to study air pollution in Cape Verde, off the coast of West Africa. During her time there, the region was hit by the first hurricane to strike the island in roughly a hundred years. This experience helped solidify her interest in atmospheric science — and the implications of social and economic inequity.

An Industrial Engineer Committed to DEI:
AAAS Member Pamela McCauley

During AAAS’ 2023 Annual Meeting in March, Pamela McCauley appeared on a panel called, “Four Black Women STEM Leaders: Who Gets to Innovate, Lead and Participate.” She and the other panelists talked about being the first African American women to serve as program directors of the National Science Foundation’s Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Directorate.

A Blooming Partnership:
Interview with Ambassador Koji Tomita

Ambassador Koji Tomita has led the Japanese Embassy to the United States since 2021 and has been a member of Japan’s Foreign Service for more than four decades. He recently spoke with Kim Montgomery, Director of International Affairs and Science Diplomacy and Executive Editor of "Science & Diplomacy", on Japan’s science diplomacy strategy.

Section Steering Committees are composed of a Section Chair, Secretary, Council Member, Nominations/Leadership Development Chair, Membership Engagement Chair, Non-academic Representative, Early-Career Representative, and two At-large Representatives.
