Dear Member,
America’s leadership in science and technology is no accident. But what got us to this point won’t get us where we need to go. As a new U.S. administration and members of Congress take office, we’re hard at work with a proactive strategy to meet this moment. I’m energized to chair a task force of nearly 70 prominent leaders that is crystalizing a Vision for American Science and Technology (VAST). The vision must be inspirational and aspirational about the role of the scientific enterprise, what it can and should do for our communities, and how it can enable a more prosperous, healthier and safer world while ensuring the pace of discovery doesn’t diminish. Pulling together an aspirational vision and concrete steps toward that vision will not be an easy nor non-controversial task. But if we are to be the authors of our own narrative it is an activity we must undertake.
You can check out the editorial in Science I co-authored with National Academy of Sciences President Marcia McNutt and IBM Research Director and National Science Board Chair Darío Gil to learn more about VAST. Thank you to the AAAS Section Leaders who joined us for a lively discussion about the future of America’s S&T leadership; many of their contributions are reflected in our work.
In case you missed it, during a recent AAAS webinar, Pew Research Center revealed a slight bump in Americans’ confidence in scientists to act in the public’s best interests. However, there remains a sizable partisan gap in confidence in scientists and how Americans view the role of science in policymaking. This is trust that we must rebuild. During a panel discussion moderated by Pew, Science Editor-in-Chief Holden Thorp, AAAS Board Member Kathleen Hall Jamieson and I covered the implications for the scientific enterprise. Missed the discussion? Watch it now.
In this last Member Update of the year, here is a small dose of wonder: Learn how researchers hope to make electronics greener with leaves.
I wish you a joyful holiday season filled with meaningful connections with your loved ones!
