MESSAGE FROM AAAS

The Local Science Engagement Network (LSEN) is growing and looking for new local leaders!

Do you want to help AAAS mobilize on the state level? We are recruiting for LSEN Liaisons who will lead state networks in fostering relationships built on mutual trust with influential civic, community, business, policy leaders, and other stakeholders. Liaisons will receive valuable training from AAAS staff and other experts and will grow their experience in science communication, civic engagement, network leadership and advocacy as they foster networks of science advocates. This is a volunteer position, and applicants must hold a degree in a STEMM field.

Your vote matters! The AAAS election of general officers and vote on the amendment to the Constitution is now open and will close at 11:59 pm ET on February 28, 2023. Biographical information for the candidates and Constitution amendment can be found in your electronic ballot, but you can learn more about the two president-elect candidates below.

If you need your online voting credentials resent to you, please contact support@directvote.net. We invite all members to vote via electronic ballot. If you prefer to vote in-person, you may do so at an All-Member Meeting on March 5, 2023, 4:00 – 5:00 pm ET, at AAAS Headquarters, 1200 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20005. However you choose to vote, you may only vote once. If you intend to cast your ballot in-person, we ask that you RSVP by email to elections@aaas.org.

What can the world of mathematics do for us? For one, it can prove theorems and solve puzzling questions in the world of physics, says mathematical biologist Abba Gumel, Ph.D. But the 2022 AAAS Fellow is far more interested in what it can do for human health—how it can help us tackle diseases, prevent their spread, and save lives. In short, how mathematics can change the world.

A Window into the Biology of Humans
New Fellow Eduardo Fernández-Duque

Growing up in Buenos Aires, Eduardo Fernández-Duque, Ph.D., loved the outdoors and watching animals. The AAAS Fellow, who maintains dual citizenship in Argentina and the United States, gets to follow both passions as a biological anthropologist, someone who tries understanding humans through the lens of science and the human condition with a focus on human biology.

Amid continued discussion about ensuring public access to scientific research, the Science family of journals and AAAS are pleased to announce an expansion of our two-decades-long support for green open access—by which authors can achieve public access with no charge.

Immediately upon publication, authors of peer-reviewed research submitted to the Science family of journals on or after January 1, 2023 may place their accepted manuscript (a fully peer-reviewed and revised version) in any publicly available repository.

The Science family of journals and AAAS continue to look at public access to scientific research with the view that it should foster not only a diverse universe of readers, but also of authors—regardless of their economic circumstances.
