    Hey everyone! 

    Have you ever thought about the connection between MLK Day and promoting STEMM? I believe there is one! This MLK Day, let's come together to prioritize local engagement through STEMM and honor Dr. King's vision of a just and equitable society. One thing I like to do is volunteer at a local soup kitchen. It's a wonderful way to give back to the community and connect with people from all walks of life. 

    Here are some fun and impactful ideas that may be helpful to you as you consider how to serve your community on MLK Day: 

    • Pull invasive plants in your local parks or backyards. 

    • Plant trees or start a community garden. 

    • Organize a neighborhood clean-up day. 

    • Help out at a local animal shelter. 

    • Donate STEMM books or supplies to local schools. 

    • Host a STEMM activity or craft for kids with local leaders at your community center. 

    • Contact your local school district and offer to volunteer as a judge for STEMM activities or share your STEMM journey with the kids. 

    • Create care packages for the homeless. 

    • Tutor students in STEMM subjects you're passionate about. 

    MLK Day is this upcoming Monday,  January 20. Even if we can't volunteer that day, let's use it to plan how we can honor his legacy throughout the year. Simple things like talking with young minds about Dr. King's values can make a big difference. Attending your local MLK parade and creating connections for future community engagement are also great ways to promote STEMM and bring us closer.

    I love this call to action in honor of Dr. King to get involved and be of service to our communities. My family became a first-time foster family for a very handsome rescue dog at DC's Humane Rescue Alliance. Garland is a pit bull mixed breed who brought so much love to our family. Many shelters are struggling and there's not enough room for all of the animals waiting to be adopted. I encourage anyone to try out adopting and/or fostering!
