Hi everyone! I'm Dr. Paula R. Buchanan, a socio-hydrologist, disaster and emergency management researcher, and long-time science communicator who's excited to join you as a Digital Liaison for the National LSEN Community.
I've spent much of my career working at the intersection of drinking water, public health, and community resilience. Along the way, I've had the opportunity to work with FEMA and the CDC, as well as serve as a SciComm Identities Project (SCIP) fellow, all of which have shaped my perspective on risk communication, systems-level decision-making, and the individuals most affected by both.
I'm also a proud alumnus of the American Geophysical Union's (AGU) Voices for Science program. One highlight from that experience was directing and producing my first animated short film, "Attack of the Evil Fatbergs!", a storytelling project in which I merged science, art, and my inner "water nerd" to discuss how our everyday choices impact drinking water systems.
In my new LSEN role, I'm excited to help strengthen connections among scientists, local communities, and decision-makers through communication that builds understanding and trust.
I'd like to connect with others across the scientific community, especially those working on water issues, communication, community engagement, or similar topics. What water-related projects or questions are you currently exploring in your work? Let's talk!
