Hello everyone!
My name Lorenzo Smith, and I am thrilled to introduce myself as the next AAAS LSEN Liaison for Utah. I am currently a Ph.D. candidate studying cancer biology at the University of Utah where the overarching goal of my research is to improve therapeutic strategies for a rare disease called adrenal cancer.
Outside of my research, I am deeply passionate about science policy and public engagement. I have been fortunate to work with national organizations including the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, the National Science Policy Network, and the American Cancer Society, where I have gained invaluable policy and engagement experiences such as crafting memos and meeting with lawmakers in hill day discussions.
What I have learned through these experiences is critical: scientists must be visible, trusted, and active participants in important policy conversations. I strongly believe Utah is in a unique position to leverage its extraordinary scientific talent to tackle emerging policy issues in the state.
Over the next year, I look forward to connecting Utah scientists with opportunities for engagement and help strengthen relationships between scientists, policymakers, and the public.
