Science Communication Hackathon

When:  Apr 1, 2025 from 01:00 AM to 05:00 PM (MT)
Associated with  Utah LSEN Community

We cordially invite you to participate in the Utah SciComm Hackathon, an opportunity to develop and showcase your science communication skills!

Funded by the Research!America Civic Science Microgrant, this hackathon challenges students to create engaging and accessible science communication materials—infographics, short videos, podcasts, or slide decks—that make complex research understandable to broad audiences.

Why should students participate?

  • Gain hands-on experience in science communication.
  • Have your work featured on the University of Utah BREO website.
  • Six finalists will be selected to present their work at the Utah SciComm Symposium in early May (flyer attached), where they will compete for cash prizes ($500 for 1st place, $200 for Audience Choice).
  • Finalists will also work with us to improve their materials and presentation skills before the symposium.

🔗 Submit Projects Here: https://forms.gle/VBTEc16sMRwY8KMK8

Submissions may include, but are not limited to:
-- Infographics
-- Short videos
-- Podcasts
-- Slide decks (max 5 slides with a video recording of yourself presenting)
-- Other creative formats – Science comics, animations, mixed media, or a combination of categories are welcome!

We encourage applicants to use any format that best communicates their research to a broad audience. If combining multiple formats (e.g., an infographic with a short video), ensure they complement each other to enhance understanding.
