  • Help us map KC's Urban Heat Island

In the Summer of 2021, a partnership between the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC) Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, The Kansas City Missouri Office of Environmental Quality, The Missouri Local Science Engagement Network, The Mid-America Regional Council, Missouri Office of the Public Counsel, Evergy, Bridging The Gap, and Kansas City Teen Summit will launch a participatory 1-day community campaign to map urban heat in Kansas City.

On the day of the campaign, as a volunteer, you will drive the designated routes to collect real-time heat data including ambient air temperature and humidity with GPS-tracked heat sensor equipment. Data will be collected three times, the morning (6-7 am), afternoon (3-4 pm), and evening (7-8 pm) on one day between July 22 and August 13 when the weather conditions are favorable for the campaign. To collect the most helpful heat data, the campaign needs to take place on a hot, clear-sky day.
