Webinar Recording & Resources | Effective Meetings with Lawmakers at All Levels

08-05-2025 11:04 AM

On July 30, we hosted the LSEN Community Learning Forum, Effective Meetings with Lawmakers at All Levels.

The next few months may be the most important ever for American science, with vital funding decisions that could affect the enterprise for generations to come. As Congress heads into August recess, now is a powerful time to meet with your elected officials, share your expertise, and build lasting relationships through district-based conversations. These conversations can directly shape how science is supported, how research is funded, and how local challenges are addressed through evidence-based solutions.

@Gwendolyn Bogard, AAAS Senior Government Relations Officer, opened the session by sharing uplifting stories from LSEN members who have successfully engaged with policymakers, demonstrating the real-world impact of these efforts.

@Rachel Owen followed with a practical, step-by-step walkthrough of how to plan, prepare for, and lead meetings with elected officials. She emphasized showing up with humility, focusing on shared interests, and staying engaged over time as key strategies for building trust.

Key resources from the webinar to help you take the next step:

  • Effective Meetings with Lawmakers Resource Sheet: A guide to help you prepare for impactful meetings at every level of government, including how to frame your message, tell your story, and adapt your approach based on who you’re meeting with.

  • AAAS District Visits Guide: A step-by-step tool for setting up meetings with Members of Congress or their staff in your local district, including tips for preparation, sample emails, and how to follow up effectively.
