Empathy is one of the most powerful tools we have in science communication, especially in moments when connection feels difficult. In our latest LSEN Community Connect webinar, Leading with Empathy in Science Communication, a panel of experts joined us to explore how empathy can make STEMM conversations more inclusive, relatable and impactful.

Moderator Natasha DeLeón-Rodríguez emphasized how empathy strengthens relationships across differences and helps create space for meaningful dialogue. Panelists Katy Hinman, Hallie Thompson and Reyhaneh Maktoufi shared personal and practical insights about why empathy matters in communication and how STEMM professionals can apply it in their daily work. They noted that approaching conversations with curiosity, humility, and compassion can help break down barriers, especially when engaging across diverse experiences and viewpoints. They also highlighted ways to make complex topics more accessible, including active listening, connecting through shared values, and meeting people where they are.

Strategies shared during the session included:

• Using empathy to build early rapport and reduce tension.
• Framing scientific information in ways that align with community experiences.
• Practicing reflective listening to better understand concerns and motivations
• Creating more space for dialogue instead of focusing solely on delivering information
